| We planted a prairie fire crab about 5 years ago. This year we just noticed that the bark is splitting both on the main trunk and also on the branches. Is this normal? If not, what do we do about it?

| There are all sorts of causes to bark splitting, usually a response to an environmental factor like frost/thaw, sun scald, even fluctuating weather/temperature conditions. Fruit trees - like the crab - have thin bark and are quite prone to splitting. Typically it is more of a cosmetic issue than a serious threat to the health of the tree and the tree is usually able to adapt to and seal/scar over the split with ease. |

| Yes.......I also agree with that. I'm seeing it for the first time this year on a fifteen year old ornamental cherry tree, but this has been a bizarre year for weather. I have it on several of my fruit trees and no serious issues ever developed. |

| Thank you so much gardgal48. I downloaded the article on the link you listed. It was very helpful to my husband. And callipe I am glad to know that we are not the only ones seeing this. |
