black tulip magnolia pruning question

Hi all, I purchased a young black tulip mag from a garden show display early this spring. It had been forced and displayed a little too close to a fire pit., but it was covered in blooms top to bottom branch. The tree had to wait for two weeks to be planted for the frost to pass but came through looking fine and when we planted it, the roots looked very healthy. This was early April.

Now it is July, it has been very mild and a lot of rain, but you can see the very healthy leaves in the attached image, but the leaves go only halfway up. So should I prune off the seemingly dead branches or wait and see what next spring brings since pruning may stress it? And has the right pruning time passed?

Thanks for any help!
