Just wanna ask a question. If a tree that had transplant shock and loss leaves (Eg a week a ago) can it still form buds or already have buds for next spring? Or will it just be dead wood?

Yes, of course trees can recover from transplant shock. Most likely if it survives the transplant experience, it will put out new growth yet this year, but that doesn't apply to all species by any means.

Be sure you are monitoring soil moisture levels (both inside and outside the rootball) carefully. Use the finger test (discussed here frequently) to determine when you need to water.

Here is a link that might be useful: Planting a Tree or Shrub - see section 12 especially

RE: Tree general question.

buds are .. technically.. always there..

something needs to happen.. to trigger them .. and total leaf loss will .. presuming the tree is otherwise healthy ...

when you TRY AGAIN ... start by defining PROPER PLANTING TIME ... which is included in brandons link above ...

and for you in TN.. that was probably march ..

so ... in hindsight.. you can see .... that you missed proper planting time by a bit..

i like to say.. that you plant trees.. 6 to 10 weeks before the real heat of summer hits.. and in the case of a deciduous tree.. when it is dormant or leafless .. is even better ..

and that is so.. all the leaves wont fall off.. before the roots start pumping water again ...

now.. as to your tree.. you didnt tell us what it is.. so its hard to predict.. what will happen.. if its a maple.. well.. you could have probably left it on the driveway for a few days.. and it will live.. if its a foo foo tree.. who knows..

just WATER PROPERLY ... and deeply ... and watch ..
