Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I have a Japanese Maple that has a branch that has died in the last few months. The bark is split along the top of the branch and there is also what appears to be a bore hole. I cut it off and pried it open and the attached image is the insect found inside. I'm not sure what type of insect this is or if it was what actually caused the hole. Any help would be most appreciated,
