I was wondering about whether a ginko would be able to compete and grow in a forest? I would like to plant a seedling on my land deep in the forest as an experiment. I would only plant one so they dont spread around and become invasive. What type of growth/habit should I expect?

Most ginkgo I've seen are slow growers. What species are currently present in the forest where you plan to plant this? That is going to make all the difference. Almost regardless of what the answer to that question is, I'd suspect you will have to keep the competition down around it. +oM

Mostly tulip poplars, oaks, and maples. Can you give an estimate for size potential? The soil is really good; very deep and black. There is a protected cove on part of my property that is sheltered. One giant red oak fell down however (6 feet diameter) and left a canopy gap. That is where I want to plant the seedling.

If you just plant one, it has no chance to become invasive. Most ginkgo's sold today are male anyway, but even if you somehow got a female, I would think that it would need a pollinator in order to set seed. I *have* seen ginkgo seedlings coming up in ivy beds, but no idea how long they last.

You are just kidding about them becoming invasive aren't you? They'll do just fine in a forest/woods environment as long as they can get enough light. Choose a location where there's a break in the canopy (common in natural areas).
