Ewwww... what is this and what do I do with it?

I recently inherited an overgrown & neglected garden with my new house. Have 10 or so of these trees I presume were planted to create a natural privacy fence. They do block the neighbor's view, but also seem riddled with ants as well as whatever this is somewhat underneath the bark. I am a former apt dweller and am new to this whole gardening thing (but loving it so far), so any help and/or advice would be awesome :) Thanks!

The bumps are scale. The trees/shrubs were seriously damaged some time ago - which killed bark and exposed bare wood.

The ants are farming the scale insects. Can you post a photo of the trees? Are they healthy looking otherwise? I scrape scale off of my plants, but this might be too big a job to do that. In that case, there are systemic poisons you can use, but I am unfamiliar with them. Renee |

I have 15 of these Hop(seed) bushes all infested to some degree and most are about 10' tall. Also, this has quickly moved to the top of my gross factor list. So it's an emphatic no to the hand scraping. Yesterday I treated with the tree/bush systemic spray that attaches to the hose. Just now I took the stream hose setting to the trunks and a lot of bark came flying off (along with a number of critters). Should I be concerned about this? Now I plan to apply Tanglefoot to each trunk; I am so not worried about aesthetics.

Well, you seem to have blasted most of them away. If the bark came off it was dead anyway. There are systemic soil drenches that will kill sucking insects. Good for you with the tanglefoot- that should help. I'd keep them clean of insects and see if they start looking healthier again. It would be a shame to lose them, they look nice there.

properly cut all the stubs off the trunk ... ken

@hosenemesis Trust me, there's plenty more. I did use a bottle of the systemic. How would I know if I used enuf? And yes it would be a shame to lose my natural fence. Other than that I do not particularly care for them. @Ken What is proper removal? Forgive me as all this is quite new.

Hmmm, well, if you don't like them, you don't have to keep them. You should go by the instructions on the poison. The bottle should tell you how much of the solution to use for a spray treatment or for a soil drench, and how many mixed gallons for each type of plant. It varies, depending on the chemical. Ken means cut off the branch stubs that are sticking out from the trunks. If you cut them back to the trunk, it will look much nicer and heal better. Renee
