No rake/less messy shade tree to satisfy the treephobes

I'm not a treephobe. I think open fields on the East coast are best used for farming and playing sports. I don't like grass deserts.
That being said, I want to create some shade on a sunny piece of sandy loam. Other people that I have to get along with have strongly requested that I stick with something that doesn't need raking. I was even told "Don't plant a tree with leaves". Fighting words for me, but like I said, I have to get along. I don't need a debate on how we feel about this, but I would like some suggestions for evergreen or minimal raking shade trees. There's nearby power lines and structures so it can't be too big, and I'm thinking beyond pine trees.
