of the USNA Crapemyrtle research program shown here is 'Powhatan'. This Southern Lilac shows no sign of "murdering" or butchering up by pruning. AAMOF I see no signs of pruning anywhere.

Nice fragrance to the flowers, mildew resistant foliage. Native to east Asia, L. indica must have it sunny and hot to put on a show like this.

Multi-stemmed specimen gives plenty of surface area to show off the bark.

To me Crapemyrtle means summer vacation, dog days, peaches & sweet corn and fond memories, what does it mean to you?

A tree that I can't grow...sure is a nice specimen. Really like that bark.

That is gorgeous - I wish I had the room for that kind of display.

Whaas, the hybrids (indica x faurei) can be worth a try. They'll die back to the ground, however, bloom on current growth. I've been meaning to plant one, just haven't gotten around to it.

I easily grow Clerodendron trichotomum the same way here.

They also make great container plants, easy to overwinter in a barely-heated space, and they can be in darkness all winter as they are dormant.

you must have spent some time in the south at some point, sam. peaches came in earlier, fresh corn is too in the areas that had enough rain but dog days is spot-on! they (most of them) are in full glory here and are real troopers during the hot, dry summer months. i did not know there were fragrant varieties, though.

That would be Beaufort SC for two years at the Marine Corps Air Station. I learned about purple-hull jelly, banana pudding and a few other thing which shall go unmentioned (it was the 70's :)
The CM in my OP is by the Bonsai Pavillion at the Nat'l Arboretum, the right tree in the right place. It is a specimen, not a row and in scale with the one story buildings.
BTW did we ever sort out whether CM is a tree or shrub?
