How can I save these Nigra Arbs?!?!

Hello All-

I have 20 of these 12' tall Nigra Arborvitaes lining my 6' high fence. I had them planted to eventually form a nice hedge for privacy. They were planted 3 years ago and have not grown much at all! You can see from the pictures that some of them are very sparse and you can clearly see through them. Others are very hearty and growing nicely. The ones that are growing nicely were only about 8' when planted. The ones that are not doing great were already 10-12' when planted.

Is there anything I can do to make them more bushy and start growing together? Maybe a nice fertilizer or I was even thinking of topping them to encourage side growth.

I am at a loss and want to try to save them before I pull them and put in leyland or green giant which will grow much quicker and form a nice hedge.

probably insufficient water.. during the establishment period on large transplants with no mulch .. determine need and increase water ...

though the pix are a bit fuzzy ... i dont see much wrong with them ...

perhaps the only failure.. is your level of expectation on a large transplant ..

had you not gone with a monoculture of one plant ... you might not be contemplating removal of all 20 ...

properly spaced GGs ... would have to be at a min.. 10 to 15 feet from that fence ...

i am not sure.. you will find many peeps in favor of leylands... but all the power to ya.. if that is your new choice ..

if they are water stressed... a 'nice' fert is not going to help ...

interesting.. that the larger of the transplant.. are suffering the worse ...
