Tree ID Without Much Information

Please forgive me for asking this without a picture or more details but I hope someone will know anyway. There are a few yards I pass by that have trees that look almost silver. They aren't white or variegated. I haven't been able to get close enough to describe their leaf shape. The trees are pretty big but not huge. I can tell they are not maples. They have a kind of unique look that I can't describe. Does anyone know what they might be?

Well, are you warm enough there for Eucalyptus? Some of these are very silvery, but I suspect there isn't anywhere in TN that is warm enough for them to succeed long-term.

In more temperate zone trees, there is, of course, Russian Olive, but that is a pretty distinctive tree, and the foliage is small, like their namesake the true Olive.

There are also some poplars that are pretty silvery -- the classic one, of course, is silver poplar aka white poplar, Populus alba. This tree also hybridizes with Aspen to make Grey Poplar.

Some linden, sycamore, willow species have fairly silvery/gray undersides of the leaves, but it can be variable from specimen to specimen.

Likely Russian olive......

Thanks so much for the ideas! I'm pretty sure it's not a Russian olive but I think it might just be one of the poplars. One of these days I'll have to get up enough nerve to stop in and ask someone if I can get a sample for a closer look.

Quite likely white poplar then. From any distance, more silver than green in appearance. And now for my nightly admission-I have a fondness for groves of "invasive" white poplar out in the countryside or next to an old house somewhere. I like the look and don't consider these small and scattered pockets to be any kind of ecological threat. I mean. what's being crowded out, a bunch of box elders?
