Oh, and generally old trees with rot problems, trees planted next to streets where their roots can not form naturally and trees who's protection from wind was removed blow over. I would say if your tree held uo to fifty mph winds this year it shoukd next.

Now talk about tornados like I get or hurricanes with ground softening soaking rains like the souteast gets and it all seems random.

But in general the sequois family has good form for wind resistance.

so in other words.. your 70 foot tree is hanging over the neighbors house???? .. in a high wind area .... lordy me ...

Redwoods basically don't blow over, unless there is a serious structural defect - the lean on yours almost certainly is due to it having come from the commercial grower in a root-bound condition. Or it was rooted from a side shoot. Either way by now it has probably overcome its early years and gotten well anchored - it being a redwood. All you can do is get qualified expert opinions from people viewing the tree in person, on the site and then use these to decide if you want to keep it or cut it.

In general, the coastal redwoods on the California coast easily withstand 100 mph winds comIng from powerful Pacific storms, those trees live for 1000 years, I don't think it will be a problem in your lifetime. Redwoods interlock their roots with other trees, so it's better if other trees nearby for stability.
