Accolade Elm Tree planted too deep?

Hi,

I have another question related to planting a tree too deep.

I had an Accolade Elm tree planted about a year ago and have been educated through this forum about the proper planting depth and location of the root crown. I though I would check to see if this tree was planted at the appropriate level. Since it is in clay soil the tree farm planted the root ball about 4-5 inches above the surrounding surface area last year. As I began to remove soil away from the tree trunk today, I noticed that there are many fine roots that are in the area between the current surface of the soil and what I believe is the root crown (about 3-4 inches below the current surface level).

I would like to remove some of the excess dirt above the root crown and roots, but I am not sure if this will do more damage to the tree than just leaving it at it's current depth. Does any one have any thoughts or opinions on if I should keep the soil where it is or take it down to the appropriate level just above the root crown.

Sorry for the lengthy message and thanks for any help you can offer!
