Where are you in zone 6? I would say Birch, but I know that is wrong. It looks like there are white flower buds in your pic.

Those white flower buds open up to reveal red seeds. I am in southern Illinois.

It is a magnolia of some sort. The white "buds"are seedpods.

I posted about this already but can not seem to find the post. I have access to thousands of apples and was wondering what is the best way to use these in my composting

Chop them up a bit and add to your bin and mix with leaves and grass clippings and other material. You're lucky to have them!
