| I'd need a closer image to be sure, but I think that's sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus). If you're still nearby, check for the most amazing scent, reminiscent of strawberries. An excellent native shrub! |

| Of course, I don't think sweetshrub blooms in August, so either it's an older image and you can't smell it, or it's something else altogether. ;-) |

| To me it looks like Sambucus racemosa in fruit rather than a flowering shrub. As usual there is no indication of where this thing is growing so that guess might be wildly inaccurate. Are we still in China or have we moved back to the US? |

| Yes, I would say this was an elder with fruit. Calycanthus produces simple leaves so that would not be possible anyway, apart from the red parts not being the same either. |
