| Hi,
I have a juvenile potted Champion oak (Quercus rubra) tree that in June started to develop brown patches on its leaf tips with its leaves curling inwards slowing turning white. The oak tree was facing southwards where it experienced a lot of sunlight. I thought it had got sunburned since the temperatures commonly reach to 36 degree Celsius so I moved it to a shady cooler location and watered both its roots and its foliage. Recently its foliage started turning a slight yellow with red brown patches which I know is a symbton of sunburn but could also indicate other problems such as nutrient deficiency or blight. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with this Champion oak? Thanks |

| I have one that looks worse than that. It's better to have some plants with ugly leaves than to kill all the bugs in your yard good and bad. My q.Rubra and Q. Velutina are the worst affected this year. |

| Thanks for the replies. The oak tree was germinated last year from an acorn and is now 58 cm. Its media is half potting soil half sandy soil. The oak tree is watered once a week and I spray its foliage every day to reduce the chances of transpiration exceeding water uptake. I fertilize it once every 4 weeks. The pot is now position in a location that is partially shady. I have been checking for pests and although some of my sunflowers were mottled by two spotted spider mites this year I have not found any pests on the Champion oak tree. Many of the old oaks (in ground) European and Champion oak trees in my area in the woods and in gardens do seem to have similar symptoms of brown patches and leaf curling so I presume that it could be the heat and sunlight causing the patches and yellowing. |
