| I need some contrasting colors in my backyard. I'm looking for a slower to medium grower. Something that maybe grows 6-12" a year. Red or purple leafs that hold there color well throughout the year and something that's drought tolerant.
Haven't had to much luck with Japanese maples. I'm in zone 6a, this tree will be in full sun from 10am - 6pm. Thanks! |

| young beech.. fagus.. seem glacial in my MI z5 ... i thinks mine is Fagus sylvatica 'Riversii'.. or commonly called a copper beech.. up close.. the color is a weird greenish reddish purplish .. something or another.. lol.. but with some size.. and thickness of canopy ...it presents itself as purple ... and then there are the 2 versions off that on.. pendula .. and the other.. lol .. i hope we need not discuss purple plums ... if you are considering such.. plant it next to your bradford pear.. lol ... there is also the red birch ... royal knight or something or another.. two versions.. one on whitepsire.. which 'clams' to be borer resistant ... of course.. mine such.. came with borers after waiting a year for it.. good old bayer systemic took care of that .... if they reappear.. the tree goes ... and finally.. you could just buy some spray cans of paint.. and just spray anything that dies purple ... lol .. oh.. and cham heatherbun.. has a nice wintery purple haze .... very cool.. if you happen to be out there freezing you cagoinkees off [wonder how that will translate to another language.. lol] sorry i cant be more specific on the latin.. let me know if i failed on giving enough info ... ken |

| I think 'Riversii' is a better purple beech than 'Cuprea' aka copper beech. Dax |

| Ken what's the growth rate on your 'Riversii'? Any pics? I'm reading that it grows to 25' in 10 years. which would outgrow the space rather quickly. I have unlimited vertical space, but only a max 14' diameter before it would need cut down. I was also thinking about a redbud such as forest pansy, but wasn't sure. It doesn't need to hold it's color all season. I purchased two prarifire crabapples about 4-5 years ago because of the deep purple color, I found out that they soon revert to a greenish color after a month. So as long as they hold there color for most of the season. |

| Check out Fagus Red Obelisk or Dawyck Purple. Both stay fairly narrow. You won't see but 10' wide in 30 years at most. Grows rather fast vertically. |

| If size of beech is a concern consider 'Purpurea Pendula'. |
|
| Forgot about 'Purpurea Nana' as well. 'Purple Fountain' is considered a superior selection in regards to habit versus 'Purpurea Pendula'. |

| Purple Fountain is awesome. Someone here in town has one that's at least 12' tall. I have a spot somewhere else I plan to put one. This would be placed at the corner edge of my property. Green giants to the left, my building to the back. I was hoping to find something to put in the middle of this square section so I can put some lounge chairs under the tree. This square section is maybe 20 x 20. I'm kind of leaning towards Cercis x 'Merlot'. It's a cross between Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' & Cercis canadensis var. texensis. It's supposed to hold it's wine color all year & is more drought tolerant than eastern redbud. The size I don't know, getting different information. If it gets to out of control, I can always cut it down. I just didn't want to put something in this space that grows 3 feet a year lol. |
