Crape Myrtle Suckers

I think I did something really stupid with my crape myrtle suckers... I have two crape myrtles I inherited with my house. I don't know what variety, but they're about 15' tall and I'd guess about 10 years old. They've been sending suckers up in the lawn several feet away from the trees all summer. I figured I'd fix it once and for all with a good shot of roundup. I was always under the impression that roundup only kills the foliage it comes in contact with. After doing a bit more reading online, it looks like this is not the case. :^( I applied RU on Saturday. Is there anything I can do at this point to reduce the chance of injury to the main trees? Stupid is as stupid does...
