My father-in-law found this tree about the same time as the birth of my son as a symbolic gesture and has cared for it. He gave it to me to plant. Does anyone know what type it is so I can give it the best chance for success, and so I know what type it is? It's possibly from West Virginia. Thanks

It is some species of oak. I'm not qualified to go beyond that level of ID. But others on here are. Any additional info you could provide would help them.

Not an Oak guy myself, but looks like it might be Northern Red Oak. Arktrees

Looks like a northern red oak to me as well

I agree, my guess would be northern Red. Note, though, that young oaks often have foliage which is different from the mature tree, so it can be hard to identify them on foliage alone.

Terrific thanks so much. After reading about the northern red oaks, looks like it would be a solid tree for me to plant.

Next time, we can be of much more assistance if we know your general location. Congratulations on the new boy!

I agree with the N. Red Oak designation, but I will say that next season, the leaves should start to look more like the "adult" plant, so it might be easier to know for sure.
