What would you plant on this island? (Photo)

This is extended family property in the Carolina foothills, zone 7. A few years ago it was completely inundated by hurricane Francis as it flooded the lake a few miles upstream. We lost several trees but obviously many of them held fast. The leaning ones are river birch (Betula nigra), with a small sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) hiding among them. We did lose a nice tree on the island, with the stump just behind the kid in the black bathing suit. The mass of leaves belong to some kind of unidentified shrub. The water level changes a lot as the dam upstream regulates flow. This is about as low as it gets, with the same day usually seeing water as high as the crouching kid's feet. It's been known to cover the island, but thankfully that is very rare. I know the obvious choices are birch, sycamore, or red maple, but what about swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor)? I want a tree that can eventually support a swing, and can be limbed up for a view. I always enjoy seeing what other people have for suggestions. By the way, the bank is so worn out from the use of a rope swing attached to that leaning river birch.

Thanks for the nice tunes, Ken. I don't for one second want to block the kids' play, but I do want to anchor the island so they'll still have something to stand on. All that grass in front will have to stay as is, I have no control over that. :-)

Here's another view:

These trees are all suited for bank planting, as well as planting directly in water - at the waters edge:

Nyssa aquatica, Salix, Carya aquatica, Nyssa ogeche, Quercus lyrata, Larix species, Sycamore.

Bald Cypress is the one tree that almost never washes out. It is what is growing at water's edge and in the water almost everywhere in the South. It is what I would plant if I wanted a natural buffer between land and water to slow the effects of wave action on the shore. They look really good also. The one drawback is their knees, but along a shore the knees are what breaks up the wave action.
Pecans are another bottomland favorite out here.

I didn't include bald cypress for the expressed "knees" reason. I do agree though it's a choice tree for that area. The future probelm being that the knees (are for sure going to develop) and that they will pose a serious danger to rope jumpers as well as a nuisance getting in and out of the water.

Dax,

The bald cypress trees in central/west Texas don't seem to produce pronounced knees that you'd see elsewhere. Krause springs for one example. I'm building a new house not far from it.

That looks like a magical wonderland, Lou. Hope you have a place near or on the water.

Poster, do your research, that's all I'll say.

Best Regards,

Dax
