What the heck is this thing?

I've never seen anything like this. I found it in the woods (southern Indiana) underneath some shingle oaks and sugar maples. I couldn't find anymore of them. I guess I kind of suspect its from a shrub or weed type thing more than from a tree, but I really don't know. Is there anyone in this forum who knows what this weird looking thing could be?
