White oak dropping clumps of leave

mc25a

I have a large white oak in my yard (120" trunk circumference). Over the past week or so it has started dropping clumps of leaves, usually about 4-8 leaves each. The twigs they grow from are broken cleanly at a knuckle(?). The leaves themselves are dried and brown with dark spots on the underside. There are a lot more dead leaves in the tree.

The tree has had some borer damage in the past. We have had a very wet spring and summer here in Southwest, VA.

Thanks for any insight.
