trimming holly

I have several large holly bushes in front of my house. I know the first thing you are going to ask is what type holly, but I am not sure. I have tried to research it to no avail. I am hoping there is some general rule about cutting back hollies. I read somewhere that they could be cut back by a third, but do you agree with this? The bushes need to be cut WAY back. My yard man in the past has topped them with a chain saw and they did fine; however this time I need to cut them all the way around the bush. If I cut them the way I want to it would completely cut them back to just stems. If I make sure I don't cut more than a third, will they be O.K. I plan on trimming them in early spring and am interested to know how long it would take for them regrow leaves. Would they look horrible all summer or would this fast growing bush look tolerable in a couple of months?? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for responding.
Karen

It depends on the type of holly you have. There is NO general rule for all hollies.

I will say this though, many types of hollies that you'd find in the average home landscape can be cut back severely (maybe all the way to the ground) and will resprout just fine.

Post a picture or two, and we can go from there. Or just whack it back to where you want it, and chances are good that it will be growing like mad within a month or less.

I'd certainly recommend cutting all the way back to the ground, but in the early spring and not late summer. This is not a good time of year to force a big flush of new growth from your evergreen holly. Shrubs and trees should be storing carbohydrate reserves at this time of year and not expending it like crazy on new growth.

I'm a big proponent of rejuvenation pruning, but it should be done at the right time of year to avoid undue stress on your shrubs.

That would give you plenty of time to find out what kind of hollies you have.

You missed this part of her post, Rhizo...
