its too big to transplant.. and frankly.. its about 5 feet too close to the house ... get rid of it ...

whether or not you can prune it.. would be moot to me ... its too close to the house.. and even if you did prune heavily.. its going to look like carp for a long time... again.. in my world.. warped as it may be ...

i might change my mind if it can be IDd ...

I realize that all the trees are too close to the house. They were there when I bought it 14 years ago. The pine next to that tree is even bigger. That should probably be dealt with also. That said, I don't know if I cut that pine down mostly if it would grow back or not. And I realize they won't look very good until they grow a new crown. I was just wondering if they WOULD grow one. Then I can make a decision on what to do.

Man it has grown nicely in some shade.

I have two similar trees near my porch. Sometime in the next decade they will outgrow their spots and need removed. Still though thats 17 years of usefullness and no removal cost.

Looks like Chamaecyparis obtusa to me.

The thing about both of the trees, and this applies to most conifers, is that they don't readily produce new growth from old wood. So if you were to cut the top off of the Chamaecyparis, you would be looking at a bare trunk up top with no greenery until maybe, someday, the side branches reach up to cover it. Better to replace it with a new shrub. Same for the pine (or spruce?) tree.
