| I spotted this tree near the National Archives and do not know what kind it is.
I like the spread and light shade it casts. The foliage doesn't have a heavy appearance. I was thinking it would make a nice shade tree without creating oppressive shade. Any one know what it is? |

| It may be some kind of elm, but we need a closer view of the leaves. |

| Thank you for the thought. At first I thought that the leaves were opposite, which would mean that it couldn't be an elm. But as I look at the photo closer, they look alternate. (I am not usually identifying trees, so I don't usually stop and think of the major identifying features to check through.) Thanks again. |

| Bark is like that of Chinese elm. Or Zelkova. Vase-like shape could point to Zelkova also, although pattern of smaller branches and outlines of leaves may not be the same. |
