I talked the buyer at my nursery into bringing these in next season based on this post and my Google images follow-up :-)

I am sure liking the contrast of the dark foliage and the dainty, pure white flowers.......good looking tree!!

I have grown a lot of Styrax japonica over the years. Even a few 'obassia', but I've never seen a purple leafed one. I can just imagine what that will look like with white blooms in late Spring.

The real question to me is does the purple color persist? I have maroon leaved Cercidiphyllum and Coryllus and they bleach out once summer hits. Might still be interesting, but I'm curious as to its persistence.

You know I purchased a Coryllus Red Dragon and the damn thing was green by late June.

Given the picture and progression of the cone flowers in the background it might be a recent picture or at least mid to late July. Good enough for me.

My only plants with a rich purple yet are Penstemon Dark Towers, Fagus Dawyck Prple and Ninebarks.

This beauty did flower for me this year, it literally stopped me in my tracks. As far as color, this picture was taken last week and looks identical as of this morning. The leaves emerge a dark color with a green tint when they first bud out in the spring, similar to my albizia summer chocolate. But after that they are all dark all summer. One of my favorites!

Oh my....that is a pretty styrax.
