| I'm looking to make some end tables out of chunks of tree trunks. I'm going for a tropical theme, and I am envisioning a chunk of Texas Sabal Palm, or other spiny trunked species.
I was wondering if the spikes fall off or become brittle when the wood dries out. I know the bark of traditional hardwoods does crack and fall off, but I wasn't sure about this since it is a bit out of the ordinary. Any ideas on this/experience with it? Thanks. |

| Those spiny trunks are boots and will fall off eventully. They make tiki statues out of the dead trunks which are carved. In the case of the Texas Sabal (Sabal mexicana), they grow too slow to justify cutting one down to make something with it. You would be much better off to try and find a dead Washingtonia robusta(Mexican fan palm) trunk since many died back in Feb. 2011. |
