Had some seeds given to me from a friend a few years ago. Was told they were a sumac. Planted one to start and it doesn't look like a sumac. Anyone out there that can help identify this. Thanks in advance. It has been in the pot for about 3 months now, single brownish stem, with a light purple flower now.

Datura stramonium, aka Jimson weed, a freely seeding, common annual weed in much of the country.

They're lovely, but keep children and pets away. Datura parts contain alkaloids. Intoxicating aroma when the flowers open up - usually evenings to attract moths. The spikey seed pod is interesting enough - turns brown and splits open when ripe. Collect the seeds and you'll have datura forever.

Don't collect the seeds - and you'll have Datura forever. Get rid of it now - and have more reliable sources provide you with sumac, if you want it.
