| Hi, I had a tree removed a few months ago. I hate to cut down a tree but it wasnt the best looking tree and it looked like it was 50% dead. I was fearing it would fall onto the house, and we sleep directly behind where it would hit the house.
From doing some research I think it was a Royal Empress Tree but I am not sure. It was planted by a previous owner decades ago. I never had a single seedling sprout for the two years the tree was up, but now that its been cut they are quickly popping up all over the place and from a very widespread underground starchy root network. I've been digging them up at the root but its making my yard look like a minefield. I tried Roundup sparingly, as luck would have it rain came down later in the day and killed off a lot of the grass too. Anyone have luck killing it off for good? Do I just have to keep at it and hopefully winter will take care of it? I was thinking of cutting instead of digging and then dripping Round-up on the open sprouting stump but I dont want to kill off more grass. Also, and maybe this is my problem, the tree stump was not removed. The tree removal company didnt have a grinder and I never followed through with hiring someone else. Was this my downfall? Seems like the sprouts are popping up far away from the stump so I dont feel like this has anything to do with it. |

| Take clippers and a small bottle of roundup. Clip each sprout and dab just a bit of the herbicide on the cut part. That way the herbicide goes right where you need it and you don't dig up your yard. You may need to follow this procedure for 6-12 months until it runs out of energy. |

| With my riding mower I would just zip right over the little fellas until the roots ran out of energy to send them up. Really it is more of a thing than an actual problem. The Round-Up method listed above will speed that up. Just don't let any get a good run in the flower beds. I am certain that SOMEHOW any the one piece of honeysuckle or grape vine I miss feeds the entire next generation. |
