Yellowwood and powdery mildew

My gorgeous and beloved yellowwood has had a problem last year and this year with a dark red coating on the top side of the leaf. It arrives in early summer and stays the rest of the year. Last year it didn't appear to do any damage but this year it attacked with a vengence. My arborist diagnosed it (by default) as powdery mildew. They did a massive spray of copper sulfate which appears to have worked but not before the tree lost 85%-90% of its leaves. I'm camera challenged so no pics, I'm afraid.

First, has anyone had experience with this? Or any other possible yellowwood disease? Also, do you think the fungus overwinters on the fallen leaves? Winter temps here rarely go below 25 deg. I normally don't rake fallen leaves but maybe I should in this case.
