English Ivy around Tree

Hello All,

I must admit I'm a novice at gardening, but since I bought my 1st house I've learned a lot from this community! This is my first question that I couldn't find an answer to on the forums...

One of my trees was covered with english ivy up to about 15 feet up & I have finished ripping it all down and pulling up as much of the roots as I could manage. However when I look at the roots around the tree it seems as if the previous owner may have attempted to kill the ivy some time ago. Now it has just created the ubiquitous 'mulch volcano' around the tree & there is a nest of small roots which I assume is mostly ivy roots.

Will I kill the tree by attempting to just rip it all out so that the mulch mound is level with the ground around it? The problem is these roots are heavily resistant to me pulling on them. Very concerned these are part of the tree as well. Thanks in advance!
