Kusa dogwood bark may be in trouble

This Kusa dogwood is almost 30 years old. Thus far there have been no problems. At this time the bark is looking like it may be in trouble. Can anyone say what the problem could be & how to treat it?

are there any leaves on teh tree .... if not.. its dead ...

pic of the whole tree.. and a bit closer on the bark ...

are there two suckers down in there???

A mature C. kousa has flaking/exfoliating bark like Parrotia, Sycamore, Lacebark Elm, Lacebark Pine, etc.

You just happen to be observing it at the point in the growing season when the outer layer of bark is coming off. Once it's been shed, you'll have smooth bark with a jigsaw of colors (grey through tan)
