rooting trees from sapplings?

I want to know if a tree can be rooted as a cutting, but the cutting be taken from a sappling rather than a mature tree.

RE: rooting trees from sapplings?

Depends on the species of tree. The odds would range from likely for something like many willow species, to probably close to impossible for things that are very hard to root anyway. Use of proper equipment, such as bottom heat and a mist system, and the use of special rooting compounds for hard to root species would help, too.

I don't know if the age of the propagation material would make a difference or not. Probably less so on a softwood cutting than a hardwood cutting. Maybe? Possibly?

Look up propagation of flowering dogwood. Somewhere on the web, full details will exist, stating whether cuttings are ever used for such and if so, what time of year, from what kind of wood, ie. new wood, old wood, etc. etc.

I don't know off the top of my head for this species, but I do know such information is readily available.

define sappling ???

rooting usually depends on the age of the wood cut ...

not the age of the tree ...

so if your research shows that you need second year wood.. e.g. ... then you need second year wood ...

it doesnt matter if the tree is 100 years old.. or if the sapling is 5 years old ...

make any sense???

now.. if your particular tree is a grafted foo foo variety.. that should tell you.. that the pros.. do not find rooting easy ... because if it was.. they would not have to spend 3 years growing-on grafts for market..

not that it cant be done.. but that the odds of success are low.. and not profitable ..

and all that means is.. have fun trying.. but dont be surprised if it isnt hard to succeed ...

also research Dirr's manual for propagation of woody plants...

Some trees will root if you grow from a cutting, but will only produce a branch and will never grow into a tree. Don't know about dogwood, though.

Yes, dogwood can be started by cuttings, and actually saplings may yield a quicker start than from a mature tree.
