Volunteer-leave it?

Hi all. I posted this on two other forums because I had no idea what it was. The consensus is that it is a hickory sucker coming up from the roots of a hickory we had to have removed (we did grind the stump) in the spring-tree was healthy, but leaning dangerously toward neighbor's house.

So, now that we think it is a hickory and not a weed or something unwanted, my question is, will this little sucker (haha) grow up to be a normal tree? If so, I will be thrilled. If not, oh well.

Just as an interesting aside, we lost an oak several years ago out back and cut it off at ground level rather than grinding the stump. I now have a healthy oak bush that as grown up there. I rather like the little weirdo.

Here is the picture of the hickory coming up. There are several, but this one is the biggest, so I will remove the others and leave just this one if you advise me to let it grow. I would love to have a new hickory there!
