I'd split the difference and go serious zone 6, protected zone 5. Native to the Caucasus Mountains.

Oh, and remember it's usually only a large shrub, not a tree. At most, 8-9 metres tall, but more normally 3-4 metres tall.

usually only a large shrub

==>> i ALMOST got lured into grabbing one ... but the grafts he had were so ugly.. i couldnt do it ... i couldnt find one with a dominant leader ... and this was 2 hours after seeing it a half mile down the road .. to see its form ... [i could not go back and see this one]

but of course.. being more shrub form.. that is why 'i thought' the grafts were so ugly ... basically they were true to form ...

thank God ... i really didnt have money to waste on a zone pusher ... i have traveled that road.. and usually lost ...

Yes, there is effectively no apical dominance. I am now seeing a leaf disease both on mine and on one at a nearby botanical garden. Large, angular sections of the leaves are brown and dead. Since this is a foliage plant, that pretty much spoils it.

Seems that this oak does not need a lot of summer heat, unlike most other oaks. It should work out quite well in the pacific northwest or in the UK. Even in southern Sweden they grow to 8 meters, and most other oaks should be hardy down to USDA zone 4 to thrive there.

Looks alot like Quercus Montana/prinus Chestnut oak.
