Holly - Ilex 'Crimson Beauty'

Has anyone heard of or have any information about this Holly? I noticed a dozen or so at a local nursery. They have very small leaves and looks similiar to a blue holly of some type. I could not find a reference to this holly in "Hollies, the Genus Ilex" handbook. Is this possibly a new introduction?

tim, I'm guessing that the lack of responses means that none of us could find such a cultivar. I did my research on-line.

I expect, as this kind of thing is often done, that grower propagated some hollies that may have a trademarked name or might even be under patent. Rather than go through the proper channels for legal tagging of a trademark, or the legal propagation of a patented plant...he/she just invented a brand new name.

Trademarked plants can be propagated legally, but the name can't be used unless the growers is in contract with the trademark holder. The owners will issue the tags to be used on the plants.

I suspected that might be the case when I couldn't find at least one reference to it on the Internet or in the Hollies book. I thought it might have been a new introduction but didn't remember seeing anything about it in the Holly Society Journal. Thanks for the reply. Tim

Here are a couple of pictures:

Planted a matching pair on a pool project, hoping they keep their small size and conical shape. Beautiful leaves.... like their smallish nature.
