It is indeed a sheared Taxodium distichum Peve Minaret

Ginkgo would fall in the category of the first two points.

It appears that this is indeed 'Peve Minaret'.
This is the first one I've ever seen, maybe they are gaining popularity here in the East. Notice how it retains foliage all the way to the ground. Also, notice the fine, almost fernlike texture. Online images are not all shaped like this, am guessing that the owner helped this one along with some pruning.
I can see this plant used in odd numbered groupings to create a vertical accent. It would really look great reflecting out of the water.
Now my only question, what does it look like in the Winter? Does it still have that interesting texture or does it just look like a dead arborvitae? Winter interest is a big deal to me.

I have a fairly good-sized one that my husband (who is NOT a gardener or a cone head) fell in love with at a nursery and simply would not leave behind. It is still in its box as I am not going to plant it until November. Per the nursery owner, it is indeed tolerant of a wide range of soil moistures - I am going to plant it in a slightly boggy spot. We have a pond but it is a big farm pond and I don't want to 'lose' it out there - the scale would be all wrong. I have seen one planted in the middle of a large stock tank which was kept full of water and that was gorgeous. Since it loses its leaves in winter, we'll have to see how interesting it is, but I think that the reason that my husband was so taken with it is that its branching structure is striking - very candelabra-like.

I'll report back once it loses its leaves and is in the ground!
