It was a small tree broken at the top so I couldn't get the pic of the whole thing as it just wasn't there. I found it in the woods amongst tulip trees, American beeches and black oaks. It was in a wooded part of an arboretum so it may be something that escaped from the maintained section. The leaves look opposite but the ones in back of the branch would point straight down if not for bending toward the light. What is that called? Whorled? Summit, NJ. What is this?

Looks a lot like the new young growth my Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) puts out, except my tree has red-tinted new growth and the foliage always retains a bit of a reddish tint to it. I just did a google image search and compared your photo with Sourwood foliage images, and I think that could be it, despite the lack of red pigmentation. Most of the images do show the pigmentation, but some do show very green foliage -- I guess it could be a response to growing conditions, such as being in the shade, or maybe it's genetic. The foliage on your specimen is alternate, as is Sourwood, so one possible match there. I'm voting Sourwood, but my confidence level is low-moderate.

It looks like Sourwood to me too.

They did have a few sourwoods there. I guess it just slipped my mind without the flowers or the distinctive bark. I was going to suggest sourwood to the person looking for an alternative to the bradford pear in a recent thread.
