Anyone dealing with Hurricane Isaac?

| If so I am thinking about you. I saw on tv that some areas could get up to 20 inches of rain...
Besides all the obvious damage and devastation that goes with Hurricanes, since this is the Tree Forum, will trees that are not physically brought down by the winds, are they affected long term by 20 inches of rain? Or do they cope and thus no long term effects? I'm wondering if the roots are still as strong after all that rain to hold the trees up.

20 inches of rain is not uncommon during a hurricane along the Gulf. A lot of it runs off, the soil simply can't hold that much. Obviously the more water in the soil, the less supportive it is, so trees are easier to uproot.

We are forecast to get rain and wind to 40 mph tonight and tomorrow, but the worst of the rain is expected to be just east. If all goes as forecast, it will be just a good watering for us. Arktrees

Trees will be killed if that 20" has a lot of salt water in it. Salt water killed thousands of old, mature trees in Galveston after Ike, and they haven't replaced many of them yet because of the cost. Some will undoubtedly be uprooted by the wind and saturated soil, though. I'm in Houston, and we're hoping for some rain from it, but it won't be much, if any. And we're hoping for the best for those who are losing their homes because of this incredible rain and flooding.

Rain isn't salty. The water evaporates from the ocean surface, leaving the salt behind. Rainwater can contain small amounts of salt because of suspended particles in the air, but not ocean-level saltiness. Not by a long shot. The deaths in Galveston were due to storm surge flooding, not flooding due to rainfall.

So far the East Coast has been deadly calm. My mother used to say, this is hurricane weather--not a cloud in the sky, dead quiet, sunny, warm and DRY....the Fall season is like that here...unless there is a hurricane, otherwise, no rain till November.

As a meteorologist born and raised in NJ, I can tell you NJOASIS that's a myth. Certainly you get LESS rain without tropical systems, but it certainly will usually rain without them. ;)

We are now forecast to get a couple inches of rain in my immediate area, and lots of wind. Just off to the east 50 miles or so, they are forecast to get up to 5"+. Ike gave us 4" rain, and then 60-70 mph winds gust for a few hours in a narrow band that I happened to be located in. Blew LOTS of trees down in that band about 10-15 miles wide. We certainly would not mind the rain as we are classified as having "exceptional" drought, but hope it doesn't blow as hard as it did in Ike. Arktrees

Come on Isaac, the central US and Midwest is counting on you to perform. Hurry up and get your arss out of the gulf and leave those people alone. They don't need the rain.

20" here is just absorbed into the sandy soil And into our aquifers very quickly. It is amazing how much rain it takes to flood here. |

I've dealt with TS Allison in Houston when it dumped a couple feet of rainfall on us. I got stranded and could not get home. I've never seen that kind of widespread flooding like that in my life in Houston. I've seen a lot more damages to trees by Hurricane Ike and Alicia from the combination of wind and rain.

arktrees, I see significant rain-bands pushed north into NW Arkansas, but barely west of that. Did you get lucky?

I'm in central Arkansas. Rain gauge shows about 5 inches thus far. Rain appears to be breaking up some. Wind gust last night where 35-40 mph. Luckily I supported all my wind susceptible trees yesterday. A few tree limbs down here and there. About 17,000 people in Arkansas without power from downed power lines.

I'll be watching the radar all day waiting for something to happen here in Central Illinois. I've watered enough trees for one summer... Definitely could do without the wind though. Has the storm in the Gulf peaked yet, or is it still on the up-swing?

Glad you guys are getting rain. The storm is supposed to go northeast possibly going through central IL and then over to IN and OH. I wouldn't worry too much about the winds as it progresses north.

beng, Thanks for asking. We are currently at a bit over 1/2" from Isaac, but I'm not complaining. We also missed the higher winds, though the center passed within 20 miles or so of my home. Locally I have gotten lucky on about a weekly basis for the last several weeks. While rain is not up to drought breaking levels (still in a slow decline), nor soil replenishing levels etc, it has stabilized things for now. At least the number of dead/dormant mature trees seems to be holding steady. The rain I did get was slow and steady and every bit of it that hit the ground went into the ground. It will also give me a break from watering this weekend. I think I have had to water around my established trees every week but three, since late April. Some of the heavier rain was where it it's actually where conditions worse. Hopefully Isaac will continue to do some good. I'm sorry for all the people that were flooded, or had loses in some other way due to Isaac, but there will be a silver lining for some. Arktrees |

I'm looking at radar depictions of that thing spinning just one state south of us. We've got cobalt blue skies-no clouds at all. I actually wish it would come on up here. We're dry though not critically so. Oh well, sounds like we're in for more beautiful weather. +oM

I'm on the NY/PA border along Lake Erie, and I just barely make it inside Hurricane Isaac's path. We're supposed to get between 2-4 inches Mon-Tues.....I'll believe it when I see it. I figure by the time it reaches us, the storm will have petered out.

lovemytrees, Then you are very close to Meadeville Pa. I have fiend that lives there, I was actually there around 1996 or so for his wedding. Good luck getting rained on. Arktrees |

Hi Arktrees! I live about 2 hours from there. Thanks for the good luck! I sure hope we get lots of rain from Isaac to make up for our rain deficiency.

Been a strange hurricane season so far! Very difficult for the experts to get a good feel on tracks and intensities. Leslie is expected to grow into a very large sized storm as it crawls toward Bermuda then questions about where it will continue to track. Locally, I think the only effects from Isaac was to make the already tropical humidity even higher.
RE: Anyone dealing with Hurricane Isaac?

Isaac's remnants aren't done with NJ yet.

Is Isaac on a slow boat to China! Well, I am a rain lover so glad the atmoshere is juicing up in any event! :)
RE: Anyone dealing with Hurricane Isaac?

Issac's remnant circulation center is near Evansville, Indiana at present. What's left will slowly move northeast over the next two days and end up near New England on Wednesday.
