graying and scorched appearance of elm leaves

We have two very tall, mature elm trees and they are dropping leaves already. Also, they have a graying color and a scorched appearance to the leaves. Does anyone have any idea what this could be. It doesn't look like Dutch Elm Disease, or Elm Yellows. I don't know that it doesn't look like bacterial leaf scorch because the guide said the leaves have brown edges with a yellow halo. That doesn't make sense to me so I don't know how to compare what we have to that.

you need to hire a ASA certified arborist ... and find out what is going on ...

i can make no other suggestions w/o pix... though if they are as tall as you imply.... i dont know what good pix would do ...

A couple of things to check for would be lacebugs and powdery mildew. As far as the way they look, there is nothing you can do this late.

...and therein lies salvation.....OK that was a bit melodramatic, but my point is, foliar issues this late in the growing season are nearly always of little consequence to the tree. Since you said gray, I like dr's suggestion to look into skeletonizing insect-feeding damage, since from a distance at least, this could yield such a look.

But again, even if that is what it turns out to be, not a biggie.
