Please Help Me ID My Mystery Tree!

Whatever it is, I have many of them to trade! As soon as I know a name, up they go on my "available" list!

We are in the Omaha, Nebraska area and this tree grows prolific numbers of seedlings all over my yard, although we do not have a mature one of this variety!

If you know this tree, I'd really appreciate your help! Happy Gardening! -Sheila

Might be some kind of hickory. Could squirrels be bringing nuts into your yard?

Hi Acer! Thanks for posting! We have a whole community of squirrels - black, brown and red - living in our yard. Everyone has very big old mature trees so they are very happy here apparently. A bunch of them live in a nest in our unused huge purple martin house in our back yard. So these are some uptown squirrels:)

I was thinking hickory but the rachis seem thin for a hickory.

An Ash species? (I don't know what you have over there) The fact that there are lots of self sowers supports ash.

At first glimpse, I thought 'ash' - but the serrated leaf edges make me think 'hickory' - and I'll admit that the terminal cluster of leaf rachises does look a lot like some of the seedling hickories growing here.
Should be a simple matter to gently probe around the base and find out if there's a hickory nut there or not, to seal the argument.

Green ash - Fraxinus pennsylvanica for sure.

I would expect this to be an ash tree also.

Ash, yes.

I have the advantage of having both green ash and shagbark hickory seedlings all over my yard, and this is definitely a green ash. I have a mature one in the front parkway, and it's a nice tree, hope I can keep the borers from killing it.
