It was about 2ft tall back in 2007 when planted. My Newfie is there for scale. It's not super slow growing I guess. |

| Nice! My neighbor has a Burr oak. Great spreading tree. Huge acorns. I am starting to think in youth and good sites oaks generally grow faster than believed. |

| No, I'd never say any of the common oaks I've worked with are slow-growing. Swamp white, bur, N. red, even white all grow nice and quick while they're young. +oM |

| Oaks are slow growing compared to willows or poplars, but an oak growing in a good site does grow quite well. |
RE: My Burr oak 5 yrs in ground

| Yup. As long as soil is at least of average fertility, and they're watered better than average (but not wet) they can do quite well. Feeding N can help too IME, but they don't need all that much. |

| Neighbors of mine here in Houston planted one a few years ago. It didn't grow much for several years (roots grew, though, I'm sure) but now it's taken off and is turning into a great looking tree. They're planted along a boulevard near me and the huge acorns fall into the street. I can just imagine the damage they could cause if they fell onto a car going at a fairly fast speed! |

| Nice. Leaves on yours are quite a bit smaller than mine. Wonder if yours is a more 'eastern' version (& maybe has some white oak in its linage)... 'Kreider' burr oak from OIKOS here is almost 25' in 9 seasons, starting from a tiny mail-order seedling. Has about a half-dozen maturing acorns right now. |
RE: My Burr oak 5 yrs in ground

| Yeah, the leaves aren't like some pictures I've seen, they appear less smoothly round lobey, and more severly angled, if that makes sense. I haven't noticed much corkyness on the branches like people mention seeing. |

| I've since pruned alot of the lower branches and went too far and (gasp) lollipoped it. I took too much off. I'll try and baby it next spring give it compost tea. |

| They're looking good poaky. I've enjoyed seeing your photos, recently. Any chance of seeing some of the saplings from the seeds I sent your way? blackjack, chestnut, I forget what else I (might) have sent... I had so many varieties at the time I shipped. I have three Bur I grew from seed, seed came from an Illinois providence that produces the huge golf ball sized acorns. They're two years old and 3 feet tall. Of 10 or so species all planted at the same time, they're the largest. The blackjacks are about 8" tall. Slow critters. Dax |

Newfie makes that oak look small! Love bur oaks, great trees. hortster |

| Thanks Hortster, Dax, I didn't get any Blackjacks from the acorns. I have kept 1 shingle oak from (I think)you. It lost it's top and regrew from lower buds. I have it under a dwarf tree that is not going to be around much longer. I have read that they can take shade in youth. I have moles or something tunneling in places in my yard. I received lots of Quercus Fusiformis acorns last fall and only 2 germinated. After I prune some off the dying tree the Shingle oak can get more sun, I know it's almost fall now. I guess better late than never. |

Thanks for the update. If you want any seedling blackjacks, I'm digging them next spring. I also have extra's of: michauxii, imbricaria, nuttallii, & dentata. And I have some going on 3' Aesculus turbinata var. pubescens. Send an email if you're interested. Dax |

| Thanks for offering Dax. I have all you mentioned but Dentata and the Blackjack. My yard is getting really full. I just planted 3 more Plateu oaks Q Fusiformis, and want to keep them spaced good. |
