Leyland cypress. Grows about 100' tall unless kept small with shearing - which it tolerates well.

Yes Ken, I am a little worried it's spread over time may overwhelm the area . If I maintain it by trimming/shearing, I'd imagine I will be fine.

Leyland cypress grows big and healthy in the Pacific NW (or so I hear), but I would not expect it do as well in Texas. In the South it is very prone to a few diseases - here in Florida, I basically tell people not to bother planting them (although plenty of people still do).

Here in England I had growth up to 3 foot per year! I would not recommend planting any conifer close to the house. They all eventually get too big. If you move house later down the line and someone else gets the house they may not shear it regularly and so off it goes.

You'll be able to maintain this plant.....but not for very long. I mean, really, a tree that is predestined to become such a large specimen.....whittled down to something of a manageable size can only be done for so long.

You'll enjoy a few years for sure....but it will start to look 'funny ' after awhile. Enjoy it while you can. Irrigation systems can cause problems for this plant, as can soils that are slow to drain.

Plant a Acer truncatum Skinny Dragon instead. You'll be much happier.
