Flaming red hair!

I meant to mention this before when I posted the pic of my Magnolia. I had used Kerosene to try and burn up the old red maple stump before planting the Magnolia. Can anyone guess what the resulting "Magnolia GrandifoliaFlaming red hair" is from?

If some time has elapsed it is probably a growth of moss.

Yep^. If it is not simply burned up grass, which would have been too easy a guess, it must then be moss fruiting bodies.

Thanks, there are some mushrooms here and there on the stump too. I was surprised a bit because the area is not very moist, and I thought moss needs lots of moisture.

A lot of mosses can handle a certain amount of drought when they go dormant. I have seen the same type of moss here, and we have dry summers. Currently 29 days with no rain. It will green up as soon as it gets some cooler temps and moisture.
I'd put a little mud on that stump and plant Sedums.

I never thought of planting anything on the stump. I will see if I can find some at one of the big box stores. Can sedums stand some shade? In case the Magnolia grows and shades the stump over the next couple years.
