I'd go with an Ash. I don't know which ones would be around in your area.

Ash has opposite leaves so it can't be that.

I'd suggest Hickory based on that second picture.

Don't believe it's a hickory.

Aren't the leaves opposite? The (out of focus) buds below the terminal bud look opposite to me. I'm not certain it's Ash but I don't see it as an alternately arranged twig.

I agree with floral_uk, the buds are opposite. The twig look like ash, and probably the leaves to.

My take that they were alternate was based on the original words in the first post. I think it's difficult to tell in the picture.
