Tian Xiang Tai Ge-the O Fragrans of the Largest Flower

Some posters complained that my last O Fragrans post have broken images. Here is a partial update:

O Fragrans "Tian Xiang Tai Ge (Heavenly Fragrant Pagoda)", the exclusive cultivar has flowers the size of normal Jasmine (up to 0.8 inch diameter). The perfume (best between 15 to 22 degree Celsius)is excessively strong and the plant is an ever bloomer with the peak of flowers between September and April the second year. It is a named cultivar developed by the late horticulturist Pao Chiqian in the 70's. This cultivar needs mild climate north up to Virginia on the east coast.

I wish I have one to share! They are costly and they refuse to sell to me.

You know, I'm surprised you don't have it in USA. Do you have any cultivars beside Fudingzhu in USA?

How big and how old is it in this picture? I noticed it's pruned nicely.

Do you have a picture of Yue Yue Hong which is supposedly the only 4 season red/orange osmanthus? Can you tell more about it? Thanks.

I remember seeing this tree near Suzhou in the sweet olive garden - a relatively new planting in 2008 if I remember right - and the garden boasted of 169 cultivars. This tree was not in bloom when I was there, but I was particularly impressed with a variety named Dusha Dangui, which had a few almost spent flowers and they were quite red. Several of my friends have long searched for a true red. I attended the first int'l sweet olive conference, gave a talk on USA cultivars (about eight as far as I know)in culture and I was unable to get my hosts to part with several I drooled over. One variety, forget the name right now featured very contorted branching, another has a striking variegation (green edge, creamy yellow centers on all the leaves). China needs to set up a tea olive garden in the southern usa to promote the species and encourage more use. They do live a thousand years and more, you know. The one at Linguu temple in Nanjing's Purple mountain is a sight to behold.

How about getting a tea olive garden going at SFA?

Lou, okay, I did some study on Yue Yue Hong. It is a cultivar from Guangxi province (southern than Sichuan). A naturally occurred mutation; it is the only four-season O Fragrans with orange/red blooms. It is a shrub/small tree of up to 5 meters. Their leaves are shiny but narrow. Some leaves have smooth edge, others have saw-like edge. In normal climate, it blooms 100 days each year. The red flowers may fade if the temperature is high. Some say that they lose red color if you grow them indoors. It is a very rare cultivar, but it is affordable.

Thanks Snasxs. In other thread, you wrote over 200 days of blooming for this plant. I suppose it depends on the location and weather.

Do you know the names of these plants that Dave Creech was talking about? The variegated plant sounded cool. I couldn't find a picture of it. Navigating through Chinese websites aren't exactly that easy.

Ok, Dave and Lou, I did more work for your questions.

1. Yin Bian Cai Ye Gui (Colorful leaves with silver edges)
This is a cultivar from the group "four season" O Fragrans. I am not sure if this is the one Dave saw.

2. Zhu Sha Dan Gui (Red red)
This is the one Dave saw. It is a synonymous of Zhuangyuan Hong Gui.

3. There is a cultivar called Ju Ban Gui (Mum Petals). It is said that the flower had multiple long petals resembling a chrysanthemum flower. The cultivar is lost or extinct.

4. Ci Gui. (Thorn)
This is a variegated osmanthus heterophyllus P. S. Green.

Photobucket

5. Hong Bei Gui. (Red back)
This is not Osmanthus.

Thanks. I happened to find An Illustratied Monograph of the Sweet Osmanthus Cultivars in China book on eBay last night so I got one. That will help answer a lot of questions that I wanted to know about these plants!

Hello snasxs!

My favorite plant for fragrance and elegance is the osmanthus fragrans, and you have written about several varieties that I am very interested in but cannot seem to find at any US nurseries. Specifically, you have said that the following varieties bloom practically all year. I am most curious as to which one has the strongest scent and the longest blooming time:
- "Tian Xiang Tai Ge" Is Heavenly Fragrant Multi-storied Palace
- "Ri Xiang Gui" Daily Fragrance
- Jin Qiu

Just as important, do you know where I can find one of these incredible plants? I would be happy with cuttings or a small one to start. To me these are the most special species so I would truly appreciate any guidance you can offer!

Thanks!
Kathryn

Answer: Kathryn, I like them too. One has to smell it to understand us. I do not sell them however. But I checked the internet, they are readily available. The price is about $100 each. Are you sure you could not find them?

RE: Tian Xiang Tai Ge-the O Fragrans of the Largest Flower

Of course it is easy to find the osmanthus fragrans aurantiacus (I have two of them, which I love even though they have not yet bloomed since I got very young ones a couple years ago - hopefully next year) and various other varieties. Also have the osmanthus fragrans fudingzhu which bloom profusely and I also adore. I bought 2 from Nurseries Caroliniana and 2 from Almost Eden Plants, both of which are run by wonderful people who are very helpful and sell quality plants.

However I have searched and not yet found any of the of cultivars that you have mentioned as everblooming. Can you share links to some specific nurseries that sell these in the US?

I didn't find any places in USA that are selling these for 100 dollars. Who sells them?

I haven't been able to find anyone in the US who sells these plants either. Please let us know where to find them!
