planting and transplanting (best time?)

new york south zone

when is the ideal time to transplant spring or fall?
is it advisable to do anything prior in anticipation of the transplant?

also i have planted b&b nursery evergreens in the spring and fall seasons, i have noticed that the spring plantings "lag" and are sometime "sleepy" where the fall plantings seem to benefit from the head start come spring.

any tips are appreciated
thank you

probably matters what you are moving ...

the appearance that spring moved plants lag.. is that you probably moved them after spring flush.. so they were done growing for the year ...

also help to you your zone .. as i dont know what NY south zone means interior south west ny ... is most likely quite different than SE NY ... near the ocean ... plus or minus any mountains ... etc

and your soil type ...

According to zip zone 6
The spring laggers were BB Arborvitaes not transplants
Transplant projects for this fall will be white pine

Both spring and fall can work. There are a few plants-not on your list-that don't take to fall transplanting, but most do. There should not have been any issue whatsoever with installing B&B arbs in the spring. Keep in mind that on arbs, and most conifers really, the new apical growth might look "too thin" to you because all the side branches are just tiny little things at first. Later, like next year, they will elongate, get heavier, and sag downward into the area occupied by previous years' growth. Then they won't look "thin" anymore!
