Considering Quercus coccinea (Scarlet Oak), other ideas?

With EAB in the future I feel an urge to diversify and get the next generation of shade going. I have a spot good for a medium (maybe 50 foot) spread tree like an Acer saccharinum (Silver Maple) i had to remove but want to go one step classier so if nothing changes in the next few weeks I'll be planting Quercus coccinea, Scarlet Oak.

What else should I be considering? The spot gets a little shade from my row of black walnuts which are perhaps 40 feet away. It is on a gentle hill, clay base soil, oaks, even those subject to Chlorosis, seem to do pretty well in yards on my street. but there is that juglone walnut issue.... The location is MAYBE just a little more damp than the average suburban yard but thanks to the lay of the land it can never have standing water.

Thanks to possible expansion of the shed into a garage I have decided against Quercus alba White Oak which seems just a little more prone to a lower spreading habit. I also don't want Quercus macrocarpa, Bur Oak. While I love it, my neighbor has one, it gets SOOO wide, and just doesn't have the fall color to replace what has been lost and what EAB will remove in a few years.

Thanks guys.

I have my own grafted selection of Pin oak I call 'December Red'. I'd be willing to share one with you.

Typical Pin oak structure and size. The ortet tree is 25' tall and holds the leaves which turn as colorful as any Q.coccinea well into December and even January. Even snow, wind and a nasty winter will not stop this tree from shedding the rich red, leaves.

Otherwise, I think Scarlet oak is a wonderful oak. Just an offer, Tornado.

Nuttall Oak perhaps (scientific name varies according to source). Can have nice red shoots, and a very nice red-orange color in fall. Fast growing and very tolerant of wet/clay conditions as they originate from flood plains. In a since they are a wet adapted Scarlet/Shumard Oak. For that matter some Shumard Oaks are very nice as well. However with all seedling trees, there is much variability.

Beyond that, have been very happy with our Scarlet Oak. Has performed much better than expected.

Have to admit I am a little jealous at the freebie offer, Dax. Don't you need a test location in Arkansas? Not nice to tease the rest of us like that! Haha, j/k. I'm sure toro will take good care of your baby =)

PS - I have seedlings from such prestigious members such as esh_ga and Arktrees growing at my house. Wouldn't that be a nice list to have your name added to?
