Mystery conker tree - identifcation please!

Hi,
My friend has just moved into a new house. In their garden, there is a strange tree and I don't know what it is. It may be a hybrid of some sort, but I wonder if anyone knows.
It is fairly small (not sure how big, it was described to me). It has seeds that look exactly like horse chestnuts (conkers). However there is more than one fully-formed conker in each seed pod (no flat sides). These seed pods are smooth, not spiky, and look a bit like shrivelled apples or pears. I have attached some pictures. The coin included is a British 50p for scale.
Any ideas?
