Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

One Question... to save room on my property, I planted them <2 feet from the fence...should I have done them 5 feet? My goal is to create a nice hedge on that side.

I'll try to keep posting here updates on how they are doing...maybe once a season...if I dont please post here to remind me.

I used Miracle Grow Garden Soil for Trees and Shrubs. Mixed it 50:50 with the native soil. Got them 4 feet apart from eachother. The Fence is 6 feet tall.

RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

Forgot to mention mature height is 25' and width is 10'.. So should I move them forward now before its too late or leave them be 2 feet from fence??

"I planted them <2 feet from the fence...should I have done them 5 feet?"

Yes, I would have definitely planted them at least a little further out. Which direction is the fence from the hollies (N,W,S,E,etc)? This might make a difference in whether you should go to the trouble of moving them now that you have them in place.

"I used Miracle Grow Garden Soil for Trees and Shrubs. Mixed it 50:50 with the native soil."

BIG MISTAKE! Hopefully the hollies will overcome this hurdle.

BTW, cool rocks. They can really add to a landscape. Too bad their so darn expensive.

Make sure they are not planted too deep. Also mulch the area they are planted in.
They do seem a bit close to that fence based on their estimated size, your going to be total chocking off growth on one side.

 o
RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

The fence is facing east. I dont mind if the growth is chocked on that side...just means less irritation for neighbor as the hedge won't over grow on her side...

I just dont want the tree dying because of it... They were only $40 each anyway.

ay ay ay.
Did you not do any research into nelly r steven holly first?

These are not a shrub. These are trees that can grow to 30' and half as wide.

1. You see those 2nd story neighbor windows? Thats 17 feet high.
2. You see the Maple trees that are currently giving me the privacy? They are 40 feet tall...I want them down to get more sunlight for veggie garden.
3. Can't wait to see the Holly and Berries in Snow!
4. Needed a sturdy tree unlike the arboviteas which bend with snow.
5. You can clip the leader to slow the growth so I'll be clipping it at 15 feet
6. You can make into a hedge and cut the height & width to how ever you want.
7. What you dont see is the first floor windows which I see from my deck those are just above the fence at 7 feet.
8. I dont plan on being here when they get to 25-30 feet anyway in 13 years. lol I assume at 2 feet per year I'll achieve the 9 foot height in 2-4yrs..

I'm just wondering what happens when you need to repaint the fence :)

 o
RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

OK now that I know that you don't want a small hedge there but rather something to get 15' tall or so, I must say that you really didn't give them a whole lot of room to grow. It should be interesting to see what happens there but you could have planted them on 6 foot centers and 6' away from the fence and had a shot at a 15' solid. They are sometimes grown with clear trunks so rather than a tree that looks like an arborvitae in habit, you could actually have have no foliage up to say the top of the fence. I would take out every other one and move them 6 feet forward.

Do you know about the origin of Nellie Stevens holly? Miss Nellie R. Stevens was a schoolmarm. She collected holly seed in Wash DC and planted it at her home on Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1900. One of the seedlings had exceptional foliage and was named in her honor after her death. I have always thought of it as a holly for the south.
Where does naturalstuff live in CT? Do you see mature Nellie Stevens hollies in your area?
With so many excellent, proven, shrubby, meserve hollies why did you pick this one? See linked comments from your fellow yanks.

I thought about taking out every other one...I dont see many here but I do see a lot in Westchester NY. I grabbed a couple clippings but who wants to wait 5 years just for roots to develope. No leaves on bottom?? Where do you get your info from?? Here's a pic of them full

 o
RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

naturalstuff, it's done. They're planted. Are they too close together and too close to the fence? Yup. Maybe. Probably? Watch them grow for the next couple of seasons and decide which ones to pull, move, whatever. They might not all make it anyhow, or reach the potential of the last photo. Take care of them this this winter and you can move them in the spring. Spend some time this winter thinking about spacing. My bet is they'll take out that fence eventually. We're here to learn, too, so I appreciate your sharing the photos. The holly look nice and healthy and are well mulched.

Just want to give an update since I rolled across this thread again...

Trees are doing very well. Growing even during this crazy cold winter we're having.

The company shipped me 2 more trees for free since 2 of them was a little bare and cut at the top. I have those in pots until Spring. The leaves in One of the ones in the pot is turning black..Not sure if thats freeze damage or fertilizer burn.

in any case...I'll report back in Spring or Summer...

Here's a pic of them in the snow. :)

They do pretty well in the show but those are still too close to the fence.

Any update here?

I too, am looking to plant some Nellie Stevens Holly close to a fence, about 3 feet away. With 2...maybe 3 plants on 4 foot centers. Yes, I want them packed in the area they are going in. I plan to keep the backside (near fence) trimed to the top of the fence anyway, using a pole trimmer.

Would love to hear more recent developments.

RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

Wow! Been almost 2 years since last update..

I am loving these shrubs. First year wasnt much but finally starting to see the quick strong growth on them. They are fine that close and can be trimmed however you want them. I have not touched them at all I added some more soil over Spring this year and some Holly Tone.

RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

They do look good at this point. May require pruning or removal of a few much later, but very, very pretty now. Makes me want to move a few things and plant several. From whom did you buy them? The local nurseries here always seem to have very large ones that are too heavy for me to move.

 o
RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

Purchased from fastgrowingtrees.com

I'm scared to prune because I need all the privacy I can get. Lol. I don't want to take a chance to damage or slow the growth.

Does anyone have any thoughts on pruning these?

 o
RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

Quick Comparison Post. Width is easy to see the new growth. Just look at the gap of the fence inbetween.

For height use that mark on the fence in the bottom picture on the right.

Looks like they are getting wider faster the taller for now. Still young. I also think they grow into a Pyramid which would explain the width faster than height.

NS Hollies like this are pretty common around here. These of course have been trimmed. Wanna know why they are so thick and full? Because they are in full sun and the lower part of the trees don't get shaded.

RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

Thanks for posting that! Beautiful and exactly why I planted them close. Last thing I want is my neighbors window ending up in the middle of the open pyramid. Good point about the sun. Mine are not in full sun at all. Between the fence in the morning and 2 big maples in afternoon they get maybe 3hrs direct a day in the summer.

RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

Nellie Stevens Hollies are absolutely gorgeous. I wanted them in my yard more than anything, but they are only hardy to zone ,and I am barely a 6.

I want that "cushion" of one zone in case of a bad winter.

 o
RE: Nellie Stevens Holly Shipped & Planted - Pics

I meant to say only hardy to zone 6. My keyboard has been acting up, not posting letters and numbers as I type them.
