| Hi,
I want to inquire if anyone else has had the problem of white birch leaves getting yellow and dropping in summer. This year is particularly bad. I know that my trees do get japanese beetle damage each season, but I believe from what I've been reading that this is more a case of leaf blight. The leaves have many small brown holes in them with a yellowish coloring around them. We had a very hot and basically dry summer in June and July, and I'm wondering if this is what set things in motion? Just curious to see if anyone else has had this problem. I'd say well over half the leaves are gone. If it is blight, I also have read that there is no real permanent damage. Thanks,

| There aren't little internal tunneled-out areas in the leaves then? That would be birch leaf miner. But it sounds like indeed some type of leaf blight which, as you have stated, is usually not all that serious. If these are native Betula papyrifera, they strongly favor cool, moist conditions. In the absence of these conditions, they will always struggle. Finally, if buds have formed, there is little point in doing anything more for this year. They should be okay. +oM |

| in my yard.. birch are the most foo of the foo foo .. and start littering the yard very early .. increased by your noted heat/drought ... not all trees drop their leaves at the same time ... water them deeply on a trickle .. and hope for a better summer next eyar ... i will leave the bug thing to others ... this time of year.. i just dont care about bugs.. they will get their vast reward soon enough ... when they all die.. die.. die.. die ... ken |

| I'm also in PA and the White Birch are almost naked, as usual. I count on them losing their leaves early to give more light below as the days get shorter. What surprises me is that the River Birch still has leaves. Those leaves are usually on the ground by mid-August, but this year they are still hanging on! |
